The Angel Edit: Readiness Is Overrated

Read Time: 4 minutes

Topics Covered: Embracing Discomfort, Growth Opportunities, Self-Reflection, Career Decisions

A follower recently shared that she was in a good place at work, but had been headhunted for a role that seemed exciting.

The opportunity would stretch her into more strategic and people-leadership territory, areas she hadn’t seriously considered before.

While her current path aligned with the new role, the move came with uncertainties.

She didn’t feel fully “ready,” but the process had opened up new thinking about what might be possible.

She was wondering how best to approach the situation.

We often assume we need to feel ready before we make a bold move.

But growth rarely comes gift-wrapped in perfect timing and full confidence.

In fact, many of the most transformative opportunities in your career will arrive feeling half-formed, intimidating, and when you are not looking.

While we may think we need to get our ducks in order and tick off certain boxes before making such a move, often those can be lateral moves rather than growth moves.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received from my mentor was to get comfortable with the uncomfortable because that’s where the magic happens.

This is especially so if you remain open to opportunities and go in with a mindset of possibilities.

When you’re offered something that stretches you, even if you ultimately decide not to take it, treat it like a mirror.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What can I learn from this opportunity?
  2. What would it take for me to leave for a new role at this stage?
  3. What would I gain or lose if I stay where I am?
  4. How would it align with my values and needs?
  5. What could be the best that could happen?

In the end, the choice is less about saying yes or no, and more about tuning into what this opportunity is showing you about yourself.

The question posed to me reminded me of one of my favourite quotes by Michell C. Clark.

If you’re at a similar crossroads, here’s your reminder:

The absence of “readiness” is not the absence of capability.

Sometimes, the decision is less about being fully ready, and more about being ready enough to begin.

If you’re navigating a turning point and want support in making the next move with intention, I break this down further in a recent webinar on making Career Power Moves.

Rooting for you,
