Job Hunting? Here’s How to Navigate That Awkward Conversation

Navigating the job market while you’re still employed can feel tricky — especially when this question comes up:

“Should I tell my manager that I’m looking for a new job?”

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
But there is a strategic way to think about it.

Here’s how I approach this conversation, based on what I’ve seen work — and backfire — for my clients.

When You Should Share

If you have a supportive and transparent relationship with your manager, honesty can work in your favour.

Some organisations actively encourage internal mobility. In the right environment, sharing your intentions can unlock mentorship, advocacy, and even new opportunities you hadn’t considered.

One of my clients did exactly this. She spoke openly with her manager — and instead of being penalised, she received guidance and support that helped her secure her dream role.

When to Keep Quiet

Not every workplace is psychologically safe.

If your organisation isn’t supportive of career moves — or if you’re unsure how your manager might react — it’s often wiser to keep your plans private.

You can still explore external opportunities discreetly without jeopardising your current position. Protecting your stability while you assess your options isn’t disloyal — it’s strategic.

How to Handle Either Scenario

Regardless of whether you choose to share or stay quiet, these principles always apply:

  • Stay professional
Keep delivering great work until you’re ready to move on.
  • Network strategically
Build relationships outside your organisation to open doors beyond online applications.
  • Know your rights
Job hunting is your personal decision. You don’t owe explanations until you decide to make a move.

At the end of the day, your career decisions should align with your long-term goals — not just what feels easiest in the moment.

Final Thoughts

There’s no universally “right” answer — only the right answer for your context.

Over to you:
Would you tell your manager if you were job hunting? Why or why not?
