A question I get asked a lot on my weekly AMAs is,

“Is it wise to mention AI tools during interviews?”

The short answer is yes.

If you frame it the right way.

In fact, one recruitment agency I know filters for the top 1% of candidates with a single question:

“How do you use AI in your workflows?”

Most candidates give a surface-level answer.

They’ll say they use ChatGPT to look up information or draft content.

Employers hear that and think: replaceable.

The top 1% answer differently. They explain how they:

  • Break down concepts into systems and put in time to develop prompts and workflows tailored to specific tasks
  • Combine multiple AI tools for analytics, automation, and creativity
  • Solve small but critical workflow problems no one else can, making themselves indispensable.

That’s what makes companies fight to keep or employ them.

But AI alone won’t set you apart.

Today, with AI-polished resumes, what employers are also looking for are the human differentiators.

The candidates who stand out don’t just rely on their online applications.

They show up with video pitches, portfolios, and networking conversations that demonstrate skills no algorithm can produce.

So when you’re asked about AI, don’t just say “I use ChatGPT to help me refine my work.”

Say: “I design workflows with AI to speed up execution, which frees me to focus on communication, stakeholder management, and strategy.”

That’s the balance employers want to see: AI as your co-pilot, and human skills as your superpower.

Employers want to see that you’re not handing off your work to a tool, but using it to elevate your contribution.
