Stop Disqualifying Yourself: You Are Enough

Each time we level up in our career, limiting beliefs may show up. If we don't manage them, we unconsciously send signals to ourselves that we aren't good enough and keep ourselves small.

Yes, we may go through an interview process and not get through, but something I always say is that we should never disqualify ourselves before we even start. Our job is to manage that internal dialogue so we can maximize our opportunities and show up at our best.

Tools to Process The Emotions

When that feeling of inadequacy strikes, you need an actionable plan to override the negativity. Here are some tools that work for high performers:

  • Review Your Win List: Look at your "win list" to remind yourself of all the great things you're capable of.
  • Create New Thoughts: Write out your thoughts and create new thoughts. I literally read out and say to myself, "I am a powerhouse, I got this!!!".
  • Recall Success: Remind yourself of conversations with other senior folks that went well.
  • Wear Your Confidence: Wear something that makes you feel more confident for these high-stakes sessions.
  • Power Pose: Power posing! Look up Amy Cuddy for great tips.

Shift Your Perspective

A very common scenario of this playing out is when we start interviewing for the next level up or have to interview with very senior stakeholders. Immediately, we start thinking that perhaps the position might be too senior for us.

Here is the truth:

  • There is no such thing as a position being too senior for us.
  • If they didn't think you were at that level, they wouldn't be progressing you to have those final interviews with senior stakeholders.

Instead of asking, "Am I good enough for this?", ask, "What has this organisation already seen in me that made them put me here?".

That one shift changes how you show up because you’ll move from self-doubt to strategy, and from shrinking to stepping in.

The work you do is important, but the way you manage and present yourself is how you secure the next level.
