Do We Have The Career Skills For An AI World?
May 27, 2026
When I first started building my consulting career, I had no prior experience, no fancy degree, and no one opening doors for me.
What I did have was the ability to walk into any room, read the people in it, build trust quickly, and communicate my value in a way that made leaders want to back me.
Those skills took me further than any credential ever did.
In an AI world, they matter even more. Because doing good work is foundational. The professionals who are rising are the ones who can articulate and connect their work to what organisations actually need.
So what are the skills worth investing in together right now?
1. Visibility
This is the skill most high performers, myself included early in my career, tend to underestimate.
We can be exceptional at what we do and still be invisible to the people who make decisions about our careers. AI can generate reports and complete tasks. What it cannot do is tell our story or make the case for why our thinking, our judgment, and our relationships are irreplaceable.
That is on us. And one of the simplest places to start is building a brag bank. Documenting wins, the problems we solved, and the impact those solutions had. Here is a template to get started.
2. Social capital
This has always mattered. In an AI world, it matters even more.
Social capital is not just about who we know. It is about how we make others feel, how easy we are to work with, and who is willing to advocate for us when we are not in the room.
People work with people. That will always be true. The professionals who are hardest to replace are the ones who are deeply trusted and known for making the people around them better.
The best time to build those relationships is before we need them.
3. Self-advocacy
Think of it as activating a personal PR strategy, building a reputation deliberately and consistently around a clear point of view.
In an AI world, the professionals who thrive will be recognised as thinkers, advisors, and trusted voices in their field. Being seen is a career strategy.
I built my career on these skills before I even had a name for them. And after working with thousands of high-achieving professionals, I know with certainty they are exactly what the next decade will reward.
