Your Resume Is Not The Problem. This is.
Jul 01, 2026
By the time a senior role is posted on a job board, there is often already a shortlist being assessed. Decisions at that level are made through perceptions, through relationships, through who is already known and trusted in the right rooms. Less than two percent of senior applications through job boards go anywhere meaningful.
The people who land those roles have often pre-interviewed for them before they were ever officially launched. They did not apply their way there. They positioned themselves there.
So if applying is not the answer, what is?
The gap is not capability
This is the part that surprises most high performers.
They have done the courses, collected the certifications and updated their resume for the third time. And yet, they are still not getting selected for interviews.
The instinct is to assume the gap is capability. That there is one more skill to add, one more credential to earn, one more thing to fix.
After sixteen years of hiring in consulting, here is what I have seen consistently: the issue is that the market simply cannot see the value being created.
Nobody taught us how to talk about our work in a way that decision makers actually notice. We were taught to do good work and let it speak for itself. But at the senior level, that is not enough. At the senior level, being excellent at your job is the entry ticket. What gets you the role is whether the right people already know you, trust you, and see you as the obvious choice.
What moves the needle
The way to be seen as ready for a senior role is not about adding more skills. It is about making the value you already create impossible to miss.
Start with one clear sentence that names the problem you solve and the outcome that follows. Then build a narrative around it so that your LinkedIn presence, your networking conversations, your resume, and your interviews all tell the same coherent story.
That consistency is what builds the kind of trust and recognition that gets you considered for roles before they are even posted. It is how you pre-interview for a role that has not been announced yet. It is how decisions get made in your favour before you have even submitted an application.
Learning to communicate your value will do more for your career than any course or certification you could add right now.
